Hi,
I just happen to visit this site by chance. I am a Malaysian Indian. I found this site very informative and I really liked the poems by your P.M. However, I was very surprised that there was no mention of Tamil flims on your page Films Of India : Art Movies : Parallel Cinema. you have mentioned Malayam, Bengali etc. In Malaysia even an Malaysian Malay /Chinese, Singaporeans and Indonesian too watch and like Tamil movies infact they say " the story lines of Tamil movies are better than Hindi movies" Of course Hindi movies have the extra advantage of big names and the Hindi language is itself very poetic and soothing although we do not understand it. In Malaysia it is a fact that names like the late Sivaji Ganesan and MGR are known to all Malaysians irrespective of race. It would be a shame if INDIA itself doesnot appreciate and recognize the contributions of the Tamilians to the INDIAN FLIM INDUSTRY. Please try to protrary a more wholistic picture of India and try not to hurt anyone's feelings. This site is visited by foreigners and as a person of Tamil orgin it hurts and makes me think thank god I am a Malaysian if this is how Indian Tamils are treated.

Dear Friends

A very talented actor and film maker Dilip Dhawan passed away in Bombay, truly an untimely death.

His movie Saath Saath was a very good movie, talking about the same old formulae of rich girl poor boy theme but dealt in the most realistic way.

If you have not seen, Please rent videos of Nukkad - a teleserial of 80s by Sayeed Mirza where Dilip played a lead role.

Please read this news:

Actor Dilip Dhawan dead

Dhawan started his career as a child artiste in Sangharsh in which thespian Dilip Kumar played the lead role. He acted in as many as 50 films as a character artist. The films include Ek Baar Kaho, Virasat, Heena and the recent blockbuster Hum Saath Saath Hain.

Nothing sells like sex in films

Consider the films lined up for release this month: Qatil Chandalni,
Inteqam Aurat Ka, Kamdev, Mere Aagosh Mein, Aaya Yauwan Jhoom Ke, Manchali
Ladkiyan, Pati ya Premi, The Body. They have all been cleared by the Censor
Board. Consider these films too which are in the making: Chane Ke Khet
Mein, After the Rape, Phool Bani Phoolan, Glamour Girls, Pehli Raat, Jism
ki Aag, Prem Shastra. And then consider some of the titles recently
registered with the Titles Registration committee: No Entry, Sexy Girl, Sex
Guide, Khubsoorat Chudailen, Gupt Honeymoon. The Bombay film industry seems
to be currently in the throes of a smut glut, despite the presence of the
`thought police' watching over popular culture.

Benegal, Shabana, Mammootty, Devgan Bag National Awards

NEW DELHI - Shyam Benegal's latest creation "Samar," a sensitive tale on the caste system, has been declared the best film while Shabana Azmi walked away with the best actress award for portraying an underworld don in the controversial Hindi film "Godmother," which swept five other top prizes in India's 46th National Film Awards announced on July 16.
Bollywood action hero Ajay Devgan and Malayalam superstar Mammootty shared the best actor award for their performances in Mahesh Bhatt's "Zakhm" (Hindi) and Jabbar Patel's "Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar" (English) respectively as Rajeevnath won the best director award for his Malayalam film "Janani."
The award for the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment has gone to Karan Johar's superhit "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai," which also brought Alka Yagnik the best female playback singer award for its title song.
The best non feature film award went to Sanjay Kak's "In the Forest Hangs a Bridge" (English) while the ward for the best non-feature film went to Rajeev Raj's "Repentance" (Malayalam).
The feature film jury led by D.V.S. Raju gave Benegal's film, starring Raghuvir Yadav, Seema Biswas and Rajeswari Sachdeva, the top honors for 1998 "for the innovative and human manner in which the director structures and presents a continuing social evil."
Azmi, only recently selected as United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)'s goodwill ambassador for India, won the best actress award in the Vinay Shukla film "for her dramatic and passionate portrayal of a woman forced to fight in a man's world."
"The actress lends a rare intensity and dignity to her portrayal as the victim forced to take the law into her hands," the citation says about her characterization of Gujarat's alleged underworld don Santokhben Jadeja, whose court case has prevented the film's release till date.
Devgan, who is more known as an action star of mainstream Bollywood films, won the award "for his restrained and moving performance of an angry man exasperated with the failing system."
Mammootty shared the award with Devgan "for bringing to life a national figure in a strong and memorable performance spanning several decades across three continents."
"Janani' won Rajeevnath the best director award "for a warmly compassionate film where subject and treatment are in perfect harmony."
Replying to queries from mediapersons during the awards announcement ceremony, feature film jury chairman D.V.S. Raju denied there had been a preference towards mainstream movies saying, "we went purely by merit."
"Awards have gone both to artistic as well as mainstream movies only when they deserved them," he said.
Karan Johar's debut film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" was selected by the jury as the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment "for the irresistible charm and universal appeal of its story, music, dance and performances."
Manoj Bajpai got the best supporting actor award for "his flawless performance of the eccentric underworld (don) trapped in a system, cold blooded yet vulnerable at the same time" in Ramgopal Varma's "Satya," while Suhasini Mulay won the best supporting actress award in "Hu Tu Tu" for bringing alive negative personality without losing her human face.
Mahesh Bhatt's "Zakhm" got the Nargis Dutt award for the best feature film on national integration "for boldly dealing with social and religious strife, communal tensions, violence and disharmony in contemporary times."
"The film has a message of love and peace that is conveyed in a sensitive way," the jury said.
The Indira Gandhi award for the best first feature film of a director went to Venu for Malayalam film "Daya" for the "depiction of a delightful fairy-tale-like theme lending exotic sophistication and color to the unique mosaic of creativity, imagination and style."
